SCREENING FOR ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT BACTERIA
IN URINE SAMPLES
text

eng
Chronic urinary tract infections are often caused by antibiotic resistant
bacteria. In some of these cases, prediction of the most effective antibiotic (s) may
urgently be needed. This can not be achieved unless the nature and patterns of the
resistance to antibiotics among the pathogenic bacteria has been described earlier.
The urine samples that reached the laboratory of Shaheed Mustafa Khomeini
Hospital (SMKH) during a two-year period were screened for the incidence,
nature, percentage and patterns of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Theresultsshowed
that about 92% of the total isolates were related to the Enterobacteriacae group and
more than 94% of these strains were resistant to two or more antibiotics
simultaneously. Nalidixic Acid, Amikacin, and Nitrofurantoin were classified as
the most effective antibiotics. While Ampicillin, Cephalothin and Carbencillin
were found to resist more than75% of the totalisolatedpathogens. The percentages
of resistance to other antibiotics ranged between 41% and72% These results suggest
that more restrictions should be imposed on the sale and/or use of antibiotics
in Iran.

Effect of D-penicillamine on Vitamin B6 Activation of Aspartate
Aminotransferase in Synaptosomes of the Developing Brain
text

eng
The activity of aspartate aminotransferase a vitamin B6 containing enzyme
was measured in the laysed synaptosomes prepared from rat brain, during
development. Administration of vitamin B6 increased the enzyme activity
throughout development. The stimulating effect of this vitamin was prevented
when the animals were previously treated with D-penicillamine. However,
penicillamine alone had no effect on the pattern of the enzyme activity during
development. Similar results were observed when the synaptosomal preparations
were incubated in the presence of the vitamin, the drug or both. It is concluded that
vitamin B6 content of the brain might be unaffected by D-penicillamine treatment

Endotoxin Contamination of Large Volume Parenterals as
Detected by Limulus Amebocyte Lysate as an Alternative to
Rabbit Pyrogen Test
text
article
1989
eng
The possibility of replacing the rabbit pyrogen test by the Limulus Amebocyte
lysate (LAL) test, as a final release test for Large Volume Parenterals (LVPs)
was investigated. The sensitivity and specificity of the LAL test and rabbit
pyrogen assay were studied by means of artificially contaminated parenterals.
Various LVPs (mostly containing electrolytes) were spiked with 0.5 and 5 EUlml
of E.coli 01 11 :B4 endotoxin (Lambda =0.5 EUIml). The pH of the formulations
were measured, and if necessary, adjusted to 5.5 - 8.0 by NaOH or HC1. Four of
the products showed significant responses to the LAL test when the endotoxin
concentration was 0.1 nglml. However, the remaining formulations required
some degree of dilution prior to the test to overcome inhibition. The inhibitory
effect caused by cations on the LAL reaction is enhanced by increases in valency.
Therefore, the difference between the products in responding to the LAL test
have resulted from shifts in the electrokinetic potentials between the LAL
and the endotoxin. The rabbit test response was insignificant for all the
solutions. The LAL test was found to be useful for the detection of bacterial
endotoxin in LVPs. It also has the advantage of being more sensitive, rapid and
reproducible than the rabbit pyrogen test

(II). In neutral or ammoniacal solutions, the metal forms a violet precipitate with
the reagent which can be weighed as Ni (C13H18NS2)a2f ter drying at 115 - 120?C
Using this procedure, the nickel content of steel samples can also be determined
accurately. The purity of the precipitate and complete removal of interferences
are confirmed by differential pulse polarography

showed that this photoisomerization probably occurs through a concerted

ORE MINERALOGY AND POLYMETAMORPHOSED PNATURE
OF THE ARCHEAN Zn-Cu-Fe MASSIVE
SULFIDE DEPOSITS AT THE GARON LAKE MINE,
MATAGAMI, QUEBEC, CANADA
text
article
1989
eng
Massive Zn-Cu-Fe sulfide deposits at the Garon Lake Mine occur in three
sulfide lenses in a group of metamorphosed rhyolite crystal tuffs, metasediments
and basalts. The major ore minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and
pyrite. Minor associated silicates are actinolite, tremolite, chlorite, albite and
quartz. Rounded detrital pyrite, magnetite and chert grains and diagenetic pyrite
are the only preseved premetamorphic features. Middle amphibolite facies
regional metamorphism is marked by sulfide-silicate foliation, and syntectonic
porphyroblasts of pyrite. After the intrusion of a granodiorite pluton, pyrite was
fractured, and the other sulfides developed wedge-shaped twins. These minerals
were subsequently involved in porphyroblasitic and polygonal granoblasticgrowth
and annealing. Cordierite and anthophyllite developed fromchloritized wallrocks.
During retrograde changes, some pyrrhotite wasconverted to pyrite, marcasite and
magnetite. On the evidence of textures and mineralogy, the deposit is
synsedimentary-diagenetic and of distal type
