MICROBIAL CHAIN DEGRADATION OF
CHOLESTEROL BY ARTHROB ACTER SIMPLEX
Because of the importance of microbial metabolites of cholesterol as precursors in
the synthesis of steroidal drugs, we decided to study the ability of Arthrobacter
simplex to degrade cholesterol. Arthrobacter simplex cleaves the side chain of
cholesterol in the presence of 2,2'-dipyridyl and produces 4-androstene-3,17- dione
(AD) and androsta- 1,4-diene-3,17-dione(ADD). Two other intermediates with intact
side chain, 4-cholestene-3-one and cholesta- l,4-diene-3-one were also detected and
purified in the culture of A. simplex

DNA REPLICATION AND SYNTHESIS OF DNABINDING
PROTEINS IN THE CHLOROPLASTS
OF A CALLUS CULTURE
Continuous labelling of callus with H-thymidine results in intermittent peaks of
H-DNA per chloroplast, showing synchrony of division. The increase in H-DNA
could be due to several replication rounds, and the drop to successive plastid divisions
without intervening DNA synthesis. The level of DNA-binding proteins in the
chloroplast parallels the peaks of plastidal DNA synthesis; such proteins could hence
comprise factors necessary for plastid multiplication in tissue cultures

SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC REACTION RATE
METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF
NITRITE BY CATALYTIC ACTION ON NILE
BLUE A BROMATE REACTION
A kinetic method developed for the determination of ultra-trace amounts of nitrite
based on its catalytic effect on the reaction between potassium bromate and Nile blue
A in strongly acidic media is reported. The reaction was monitored
spectrophotometrically by measuring the decrease in absorbance of Nile blue A at 645
nm by the fixed-time method. The decrease in absorbance during the first 0.5-3.0 min
of the reaction is related to the concentration of nitrite in the range of 0.002-0.500
µg.ml . The detection limit of 0.001 µg.ml was achieved for the nitrite ion. The
relative standard deviation for 0.0100 µg.ml nitrite is 1.0%. Most common anions
and cations did not interfere in the measurement. The procedure was successfully
applied for the determination of nitrite in natural water and salt

The reaction of P-diketones 1 with phenyl hydrazine afforded 5-aryl-3-(1-
methyl-5-nitro-2-imidazoly1)-1-phenylpyrazole (2) and 3-aryl-5-(1-methyl-5-
nitro-2-imidazoly1) -1-phenylpyrazole (3). The reaction of diketones (1) with
urea in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid gave 4-(or 6-)aryl-6-(or 4-)(1-methyl-
5-nitro-2-imidazolyl)-1-(lH)pyrimidones (4). The structures of all
compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic methods

ANALYSIS OF DEXAMETHASONE SODIUM
PHOSPHATE INJECTION AND OPHTHALMIC
SOLUTION BY HPLC, KINETIC
INTERPRETATION AND DETERMINATION OF
SHELF LIFE
The use of accelerated temperature stability studies using the Arrhenius
relationship is routine for estimating the stability of a drug at room temperature.
Therefore, the acceleration method is used to determine the expiration date of
dexamethasone aqueous formulation manufactured in Iran. A high-performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) method utilizing ultraviolet (UV) detection for
dexamethasone disodium phosphate and ophthalmic solution is described.
Using the kinetic information generated from the high-temperature studies, at
60,70, 80 and 90°C, an Arrhenius plot for dexamethasone disodium phosphate
degradation was constructed and the shelf-life of the drug was estimated

THE FRANK KINETIC MODEL FOR
SPONTANEOUS CHIRAL SYMMETRY
BREAKING WITH VARIABLE CONCENTRATION
OF THE ACHIRAL SUBSTRATE
This paper considers the possibility of spontaneous transition of aracemic mixture
(composed of equal amounts of two enantiomeric species, say L and D) into a
monochiral state (in which only one enantiomer, say L, is present). Transitions of this
kind have been recently experimentally observed. A plausible approach to this
phenomenon is a model put forward by Frank, based on simple laws of chemical
kinetics. In order to be able to solve the underlying system of differential equations,
Frank made a drastic assumption, namely that the amount of achiral substrate from
which the enantiomers L and D are formed is time-independent. In this paper, it is
demonstrated that such an assumption is not justified, but that the essential features
of the Frank model are also maintained if the amount of the achiral substrate is allowed
to be time-dependent

Infrared spectra of some deuterio analogues of carboxylic acids in heavy

aqueous solutions. It has been shown that a linear relationship exists between
carbonyl stretching frequency of solvated acids at infinite dilution and their

POTASSIUM-ARGON ANALYSIS OF DOMAL
SALT BY STEPWISE DISSOLUTION
Potassium-argon analysis by stqwise dissolution provides a way to measure in
detail the distribution of argon isotopes and potassium in rock salt. The method can
be used for salt that contains only trace amounts of potassium, because the potassium
and argon in detrital silicates within the salt are not released during the dissolution.
Water may be used as the solvent when relatively large amounts (one gram or more)
of salt are to be dissolved in each step of the analysis. Methanol may be used when
relatively small amounts of salt are to be dissolved in each step, in order to obtain high
spatial resolution of the distribution of potassium and argon in the salt. Although
preliminary analyses show that potassium-argon relationships in the deformed salt of
salt domes can be very complex, analysis of these relationships by stepwise dissolution
of properly chosen samples should provide useful isotope correlations in cases where
the amounts of atmospheric argon and radiogenic argon in the salt are comparable

INCLUSION RELATIONS CONCERNING
WEAKLY ALMOST PERIODIC FUNCTIONS
AND FUNCTIONS VANISHING AT INFINITY
We consider the space of weakly almost periodic functions on a
transformation semigroup (S, X , ?) and show that if X is a locally compact
noncompact uniform space, and ? is a separately continuous, separately proper,
and equicontinuous action of S on X, then every continuous function on X,
vanishing at infinity is weakly almost periodic. We also use a number of
diverse examples to show that the conditions we have imposed on the
transformation semigroup are almost essential for the inclusion to hold

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE
POPULATION DENSITIES OF LOWEREXCITED
STATES OF NEON
Many studies employing various methods have been carried out into the number
densities of excited atoms in electrical discharges with inert gases [1,2,3], but the
ranges of the discharge current and gas pressure is very limited in them all. In this
work, the population densities of 3S, 3s' of neon have been investigated using the
atomic absorption method. Since the discharge current and gas pressure have marked
effects on the variation of these densities, the pressure range of 0.1-15 m. bar and
currents up to 30 mA have been used
