FOLDING OF THE INTERACTION OF
HISTONE HI
WITH SODIUM N-DODECYL SULPHATE
The effects of sodium n-dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the structure of
histone HI has been studied by a combination of e:quilibrium dialysis, U.V.
spectroscopy ; polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, protein titration and
viscometery techniques using, 2.5 mM phosphate buffer, pH 6.4. The
interaction of H, and SDS in contrast tomanyothel-protein-SDS interactions
is organized between V 40 to 70. Above V=40 there is an exothermic
contribution from HI folding characterized by minima in the enthalpy curve
at about 65 Kj mol:' This subject has been confirmed by spectroscopy,
electrophoresis , titrametery and viscometery techniques

PREPARATION AND APPLICATIONS OF
FLUORESCENT POLYGLUTARALDEHYDE
IMMUNOMICROSPHERES
Aqueous glutaraldehyde has been polymerized under alkaline conditions
in the presence of a surfactant to yield microspheres of varied
diameters. Microbeads of a nominal 300 nm diameter, made fluorescent
via fluoresceinisothiocyanate, were used as a carrier of rabbit anti-human
red blood cell antibodies. Specific labeling of the human red blood cells as
well as diagnostic use of these fluorescent immunomicrospheresin detection
of brucella antibody or antigen has been clearly demonstrated.

SUPERFICIAL ONYCHOMYCOSIS DUE
TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM IN IRAN
This paper presents for the first time the isolation of Fusarium
oxysporum from the toenails of a man from Tehran. The fungus was
demonstrated in KOH mounts and was isolated repeatedly from his nail
scrapings over a 2 month period. Published reviews on onychomycosis in Iran
have not revealed any cases of white superficial onychomycosis due to
Fusarium oxysporum to date

ATTEMPTED PREPARATION OF
N-SUBSTITUTED
DIPHENYLCYCLOPROPENEIMINE N-OXIDE
The reaction of diphenylcyclopropenone with several N-substituted
hydroxylamine and primary amines are investigated. Most of these reactions
led to ring opened or ring enlarged products, instead of the desired N-Oxide
or imine. The reaction of cyclopropeneimine with peracid-another possible
route to N-substituted cyclopropeneimine N-Oxide is studied. Most of the
unexpected products are identified and herein reported

HYDROGEN ADSORPTION ON
SILVER CATHODES
IN PERCHLORIC ACID SOLUTIONS
In this paper studies of overvoltage and capacitance measurements at
silver cathodes in aqueous perchloric acid at room temperature are
described. Capacitances were deduced from open-circuit potential decay
measurements. The increase of overvoltage and the growth of the measured
capacitances in the course of electrolysis are attributed to a growing
pseudocapacitance component. This is analysed in terms of an increasing
coverage, ? ,of the cathode by adsorbed hydrogn atoms. The increase in
surface coverage from the beginning up to several days of cathodisation
ranged up to 2% of a monolayer for silver in 0.1 mol HC1 ,and up toO.9%
of a monolayer in 1 mol 1-' HCIO,. The increase in overvoltage at constant
current density and the increase in electrode capacitance at constant
overvoltage with the logarithm of the cathodic charge (-Q) were linear up to
Q values of about -60° C . This increase in overvoltage and
pseudocapacitance might be attributed to the adsorption and absorption of
hydrogen atoms by silver cathodes

SALINE DEPOSITS AND ALKALINE
MAGMAT1SM:A GENETIC MODEL
The temporal-spatial coincidence of saline deposits with rifting and
alkaline magmatism has now become a commonly accepted fact. The
congruency of these three phenomena implies logically, their trilateral
genetic interrelation. The conventional concept for the formation of saline
deposits, i.e an "evaporation process" can not be properly applied to giant
saline deposits. The proposed "Volcanogenic hlodel" offers a genetic
explanation for problems encountered. The role of alkaline and calc-alkaline
magmatism in producing saline and sulfate deposits and the
application of the proposed model in each case is discussed. The term
"saturites" is proposed instead of "evaporites".

SEMIGROUP ACTIONS , WEAK ALMOST
PERIODICITY, AND INVARIANT MEANS
Let S be a topological semigroup acting on a topological space X. We
develop the theory of (weakly) almost periodic functions on X, with respect
to S, and form the (weakly) almost periodic compactifications of X and S,
with respect to each other. We then consider the notion of an action of Son a
Banach space, and on its dual, and after defining S-invariant means for such a
space, we give a result concerning the existence of such means, and apply it to
prove the existence of a G-invariant mean on the space of weakly almost
periodic functions defined on a topological space on which a topological
group G acts.

AN ALGORITHM FOR FINDING THE EIGENPAIRS
OF A SYMMETRIC MATRIX
The purpose of this paper is to show that ideas and techniques of the
homotopy continuation method can be used to find the complete set of
eigenpairs of a symmetric matrix. The homotopy defined by Chow, Mallet-
Paret and York [I] may be used to solve this problem with 2""-n curves
diverging to infinity which for large n causes a great inefficiency. M. Chu 121
introduced a homotopy equation to solve this problem, In this method it is
necessary to follow 2n curves to handle the problem. Our method is basedon
a special homotopy system of equations which consists of exactly n distinct
smooth curves and connects trivial soiution to desired eigenpairs. It is
important that in our method we avoidfindingexplicitlythecoefficient of the
characteristic equation, as all experienced practitioners are aware of the
large error that may result from the use of the approximate coefficientsof the
characteristic polynomial

THE EMPIRICAL BAYES METHOD OF
ANALYSIS OF A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS
The classical method of analysis of a series of experiments is somewhat
involved in being conditional on various, occasionally unrealistic, assumptions
such as homogeneity of variances of experimental error, lack of
interactions of treatments and places, etc. In this work, we adopt a Bayesian
view to account for such heterogeneities. Our appoach is illustrated by a real
series of experiments regarding the effect of fertilizers on crops of sugarbeet
in various places of Iran. Conjugate priors are considered for parameters of
the model and posteriors are obtained. Using iniormation from different
places, the unknown priors are estimated and the empirical Bayes procedure
is employed
