INTERFERENCE OF ALUMINIUM WITH
CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM IN MALE
RATS: A MODEL STUDY OF DIALYSIS
PATIENTS
The effects of aluminium and aluminium-citrate on some serum parameters
related to carbohydrate metabolism in male Wistar rats were investigated. Daily
intraperitoneal administrations of 1 mg/kg body weight of aluminium or aluminiumcitrate
(1: 1) for 50 days led to the elevation of serum insulin by 24 or 40 percent
respectively, with the concomitant decrease in serum glucose concentrations by 17
and 14 percent. Serum insulin levels showed reduction by 36 and 29 percent
following daily treatments of animals with 2 mg/kg aluminium or aluminium-citrate
(1: 1). Serum glucose concentration elevated by 14 and 16 percent. Daily injections
of 2mgkg aluminium without citrate led to the reduction of liver glycogen by 60
percent, whereas if aluminium (2mg/kg) is injected in complex with citric acid this
effect is reversed. The effect of aluminium toxicity and the importance of citrate in
this aspect is discussed

EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL pH ON THE
PRODUCTION OF HEMATOPOIETIC GROWTH
FACTORS
Cellular and tissue activities highly depend on environmental pH. Murine lung
tissue, when cultured properly in-vitro, is a potent producer of hematopoietic
growth factors. We have studied the effect of pH on the production of hematopoietic
growth factors and protein synthesis by the murine lung in-vitro. Various
concentrations of NaHC03 were used to adjust the pH of the culture medium under
constant CO, partial pressure. The results indicated that hematopoietic growth factor
production and protein synthesis by the lung were pH dependent. This dependency
was not a result of variations in cation (N concentration in the culture medium
because N reconstituted samples showed the same pattern of dependency on pH
as did the unreconstituted samples. Maximum rate of protein synthesis by the lung
was at pH 7. 6. However, the maximum rate of specific production of hematopoietic
growth factors was observed at pH 8

COMPARATIVE STRUCTURAL STABILITY OF
HISTONES BY INTERACTION OF SODIUM NDODECYL
SULPHATE
The interaction of sodium n-dodecyl sulphate (SDS) with histones in phosphate
buffer pH 6.4 has been studied spectroscopically and by equilibrium dialysis. The
enthalpies of interaction and the spectroscopic data suggest different structural
stability for histones-SDS interaction. The linear relation between enthaly and
absorbtion was determined by the equation of m= , where m is the
stability coefficient of histones-SDS interaction indicating the relationship of the
structural stability of histones-SDS complexes.

ELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF 1 -
HYDROXYPYRIDINE 2-THIONE AND ITS
VANADIUM COMPLEX
Electrochemical behavior of I-hydroxypyridine-2-thione and its vanadium
complex is studied using polarographic techniques. Polarograms of ligand and that
of the complex is shown with diffusion characteristics of the waves. Cyclic
voltagram of thione is investigated which shows that a reversible oxidation reduction
of one electron process is taking place. PKa of the thione is found to be in close
agreement with the previous findings

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF CYCLOSPORIN-A
BY RAMAN TECHNIQUE
The Raman spectrum of cyclosporin-A has been recorded in the solid phase. The
conformation of the molecule has been discussed on the basis of Raman data. It has
been concluded that in agreement with X-ray data, cyclosporin-A molecule has an
antiparallel P- pleated sheet conformation. It may have some reverse P- turn
structure in what has been assigned to a random coil conformation.

CLINOPYROXENE COMPOSITION AND
GENESIS OF BASALTS FROM COLOURED
SERIES AND EXOTIC BLOCKS IN THE NEYRIZ
AREA (SOUTHERN IRAN): A COMPARISON
WITH HAYBI COMPLEX OF OMAN
The pyroxene composition of basaltic rocks from the Coloured Series and Exotic
blocks in the Neyriz area are discussed. Comparison has been made with equivalent
rocks from Oman. The clinopyroxene compositions are in cognation with trace and
rare-earth element analyses which definately confirm the occurrence of three
different trends in basic lavas: I-Depleted tholeiite, 2-Transitional basalt, 3-Alkali
basalt. The alkali basalts are considered to be generated by the same processes that
produce tholeiitic liquids but are thought to have had a different fractionation
history

ANALYSIS OF SOME MAGNETIC PROPERTIES

The susceptibility and specific heat experimental results of the diluted magnetic

long-range interaction in a random may of magnetic ions. The so-called nearestneighbor

of zero field specific heat and Curie-Weiss temperature based on the model
calculation are in good agreement with experimental results

EMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A
PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM
SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m
Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP.
Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We
present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where
individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission line stellar
objects, including one low and one high redshift quasar. One field has a surface
density of emission-line galaxies a factor of four higher than any of the other three
fields, but the same density of galaxies with resolved HI1 regions.

THE DENSITY PROFILES OF A LENNARD
-JONES FLUID CONFINED TO A SLIT
The structure of fluids confined by planar walls is studied using density
functional theory. The density functional used is a generalized form of the hypernetted
chain (HNC) functional which contains a term third order in the density. This
term is chosen to ensure that the modified density functional gives the correct bulk
pressure. The proposed density functional applied to a Lennard-Jones fluid confined
to a slit for temperatures below the critical point. The agreement between the results
of the density profiles obtained by the theory and computer simulation are good
