Electrophoresis of proteins, especially seed proteins, and karyological studies are
useful techniques for determining species and solving the problems of modern
taxonomy. The present study was carried out on two species of the Apocynaceae
family, Rhazya stricta Decasine and Nerium 01eancder.L. Seed samples of these two genera were taken from the south-east of Iran and SDS-PAGE analysis of their
proteins showed 35-88% and 40-80% similarities between different populations of
each species respectively. In the protein groups from a selected population of each one of these two species and Vinca rosea L., another species of the Apocynaceae family, 47-55% similarity was observed. However, for identification of these genera, the possession of 2-5 protein groups which were present in excessive quantities could be used. Studies on mitotic and meiotic chromosomes in the various populations of
Rhazya and Nerium showed that the basic chromosome number in both species was
1 1, (2n= 2x=22) but the small size of the chromosomes madekaryotyping problematic. In spite of this difficulty, the relatively larger chromosomes of one of the Nertum populations were prepared.

Interaction between DNA and histone H, was investigated in the presence and
absence of sodium-n-dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and dodecyl trimethylammonium
bromide (DTAB) at temperatures of 27 and 37?C, in 2.5 mM phosphate buffer, pH
6.4 by UV spectrophotometry, equilibriumdialysis and titration. The presence of 1.33 mM SDS caused histone H to fold and to further contact DNA. Binding data were used in the Wyman theoretical model to calculate the free energy and enthalpy of the interaction and were compared with equilibrium state. All data confirm the higher compaction for DNA in the presence of folded histone H (H in the presence of 1.33 mM SDS) relative to native histone H (H in the absence of SDS)

Cerium (IV) has a catalytic effect on the very slow redox reaction between
gallocyanine and bromate in acidic media. The reaction was monitored
spectrophotometrically at 525 nm by a fixed time method of 4.0 rnin from initiation
of the reaction. The decrease in absorbance at 525 nm is proportional to the Ce (IV)
concentration in the range of 0.005-1.000 and 1.00-10.00 pg. ml-l. The limit of
detection is 2.0 ng.ml-'. The relative standard deviation for ten replicate analyses of
0.100 pg.ml-' is 1.5%. The method is used for the determination of cerium in synthetic and in real samples, with good accuracy. The effect of interfering cations and anions was also studied.

An amoniumvanadate plus sodium molybdate mixed modifier Graphite Furnace
Atomic Absorption Spectrometric method has been developed for determination of
traces of lead in drinking water. The concentration of lead in the sample is obtained
by direct comparison to linear working graph prepared from aqueous standards in the
modifier medium, The results indicate the better performance of the proposed
modifier over Pd-Mg. Recovery of lead from spiked samples was 99.4%. The withinrun and within-batch precisions, RSD, were less than 4%. The limit of detection based on three times the standard deviation of the blank was 0.07 µg I . The sensitivity and siihplicity of the method make it attractive for routine determination of lead in environmental samples.

The reduction process for some quinones has been studid by cyclic voltammeby,
rotating disk electrode voltammetry and chronopotentiometry in chloroform at
platinum, gold and glassy carbon electrodes using tetrabutylmonium perchlorate
(TB AP) as supporting eiectrolyte. The results obtained from this study reveal that the
reduction of the quinones is two one-electron processes, the first reduction to the
serniquinone anion radical is nearly reversible and the second to the dianion is quasireversib'te.
The Gnetic parameters for the reduction of the quinones to the semiquinone
were evaluated and the dependence on the electrode marerials and apparent standard potentiai is discussed. The diffusion coefficients of the quinones were determined from both chronopotentiometric and chronoamperomeMc measwements in 0.5 M chloroform solution of TBAP

Ligands derived from 8-quinoline, 6-quinoline, 1 -isoquinoline, and 5-isoquinoline

transition metals, such as copper(II) and nickel(II). According to the spectrosocopic
data, copper(II) cation forms (I: 1) and (I:2) complexes with 2-(8-quinoly1)-l,l,3,3- tetramethylguanidine and 2- (I '-isoquinoly1)- 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine, respectively. In contrast, 2-(6'-quinoly1)- 1, l,3,3-tetramethylguanidine and 2-(5'-isoquinoly1)- 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine ligands were shown only in (1: 1) metal-ligand complex. When these ligands are reacted with nickel(II), the same results are obtained.

This paper addresses the problem of testing simple hypotheses about the mean of
a bivariate normal distribution with identity covariance matrix against restricted
alternatives. The LRTs and their power functions for such types of hypotheses are
derived. Furthermore, through some elementary calculus, it is shown that the power
function of the LRT satisfies certain monotonicity and symmetry properties. We treat
two cases, the case of one-sided alternatives restricted to some closed convex cone,
and the case of two-sided alternatives restricted to a two-sided cone

Radiation enhanced diffusion at the surface of metals has been observed and
studied for low-energy nitrogen ions at the surface of copper. The displacement
of the target atoms during irradiation creates vacancies and other defects near
the surface, thus enhancing the diffusion of implanted materials toward the
surface and also into the solid. The mechanism has been studied here by a
special method. An overcoat layer has been evaporated on the surface of the
thin film sample following the implantation and the defects have been produced
in the overcoat layer by another ion. The original implanted ions are observed
to diffuse to the new surface through the open channels created by the auxiliary
ions. The effect of this diffusion on the range distributions of low-energy ions
in copper has also been discussed
